The Bourtons - Contributor Guide
About this site > Contributor GuideBourtons Website – Guidelines for Editors
- Please use the website template as it stands so the site has a consistent look and feel throughout. To ensure a consistent appearance from page to page standard fonts are used. Please enter your content without altering these. If you feel strongly that this does not work for your pages please contact the administrators.
- Please do not cut and paste content from a Word document. This breaks the layout in the website editor! Enter your content directly in the website editor.
- If you need to set up contact details, consider using an email address at bourtons.net (e.g. villagehall@bourtons.net). The administrators can set up such an email address which is forwarded to your own email, so that you don’t have to publish your personal email address on the web. We can also forward to another email address if someone is covering in your absence, or to multiple recipients.
- When adding phone numbers please only use the local number (no dialling code) unless you expect to be called from further afield (e.g. hall bookings).
- The website needs to be interesting, friendly and concise. How can you make people want to use your pages? Do add photos for interest.
- Please consider if the content you add could be misused by someone else. E.g. Photos of pets could be used by those who steal pedigree dogs to order; phone numbers with dialling codes could be collected to create lists for direct selling.
- Do ensure that your content will not cause offence to anyone.
- Consider how best to enter your content. The layout can change from browser to browser so what looks good on your browser may look completely different to someone using a different set up. Perhaps use tables for date layouts or information that can be displayed in columns. To keep each page concise consider if you can put the detail on other pages linked to a summary page. If you have any questions at all do contact the administration team who will be happy to help you to design your pages.
- Please ensure you have the copyright, or permission, for everything you add. This is particularly important regarding photos, maps etc. Just because it is available on the web does not mean you can use it in the Bourtons website – please check all terms of use.
- Do not use photos of children without written permission from the parents. Paul Drury can give you a standard form to use for this. We need to be very careful with this – please ask if you are not sure if this applies to what you want to do.
- If you wish to add links to external sites do check the site thoroughly first. Whilst we have a disclaimer saying that we are not responsible for the content of external sites we do need to ensure we are happy with its content.
- If adding external links please set them up to open in a new window. (Click on the Target tab, and select “New window(_blank)” from the drop down menu when you are in the Add/Edit Link box).
- Please ensure that if you add content that needs updating frequently, you are able to update it that often. The website must be kept up to date to ensure that people use it. Stale information loses users. Consider training someone else to support you so that your holidays etc are covered.
- Events calendars for the various areas are individual Google calendars which are all overlaid on the Events page. Please see the Calendars Guide for details of how to edit them.
