Founded in the mid 90’s, The Bourtons Gardening Club has been well supported by residents of the Bourtons and surrounding villages from it’s inception. It is not a club for gardeners who wish to pitch their expertise and skills in competition with others. Rather it is for those who enjoy exploring gardens and wish to gain inspiration and information, provided by visits and guest speakers, to enable them to increase the enjoyment they, their families and friends get from their own garden.

We meet on the first Wednesday of each month throughout the year. Six visits to gardens and estates of particular interest, within about a 20 mile radius, are made from April to September inclusive. Departure from Great Bourton is between 6.30pm and 7.00pm and car sharing is the norm. Once or twice a year group visits are arranged, either mid week or at weekends, to venues which would otherwise be inaccessible. Past trips have included visits to, Highgrove House, Michael Heseltine’s Estate and The Malvern Show.
Visiting speakers are recruited for four of the remaining months leaving December for our Christmas Party and January for the AGM. Subjects covered by speakers are wide ranging and have included topics such as encouraging wildlife, making Christmas Decorations and the use of herbs as well as those covering plants, planting designs and general horticultural techniques. Venue for the talks is The Bourtons Village Hall, the normal start time being 7.30pm, finishing, after tea and biscuits, about 9.30 pm.
Speakers costs are normally paid wholly from club funds but visits to third party gardens etc. are subject to a variable charge levied by the garden owner. This is currently in the range of £4.00 to £6.00 including light refreshments.
