The Village Carrier

This photo dates from the 1920s, and shows David Upton's grandfather, the village carrier.  The photo shows him on Foxden Way.

The carrier was an important link between the parish and the outside world, transporting people and goods from the Bourtons to Banbury (and elsewhere) and vice versa.  David recalls that his grandfather would wait outside the Reindeer in Parsons Street and shopkeepers and tradesmen would bring their goods to him for their customers in the Bourtons.

Thanks to David Upton for sharing this photo with us!

The Village Policeman

James Cooper was Bourtons Village Policeman and lived with his family in Manor Farm Cottages, Great Bourton.  He married Sarah in 1894 and had three children - Arthur, Horace and Alec.

The family can also be seen in the photograph of the opening ceremony for the Methodist Chapel here - They are at the bottom right of the picture.

Photos loaned by Joan Owen, daughter of Arthur Cooper.  Thanks to the Cooper family for sharing them with us.
