Grit bins - Who can use them and what for
Posted by Julie Tomlin on Dec 18 2010There are a number of grit bins in both villages. The bins are purchased by the Parish Council and installed by Highways, who replenish the grit.
The grit IS ONLY FOR USE ON THE ADOPTED HIGHWAY.
It is there to enable us to help ourselves - Village streets will not be gritted by Highways so community action is needed to keep our roads and intersections safe. Volunteers have kindly done a great job at ensuring our roads stay safe, but some people have seemingly abused the system. As there may be confusion over what can and cannot be gritted using this resource, this seeks to clarify the situation.
DO grit:
Village roads and intersections where there is a risk of an accident - particularly where people need to slow down or stop, or on a hill.
DO NOT grit:
Private roads - ie roads in the villages that have not been adopted as highway.
Private drives.
Anyone seen removing grit from the grit bins for personal use or for use on private roads will be asked to account for their actions and if necessary reported to highways.
If you see any strangers removing grit from the bins, particularly if it is going into vehicles, please take down the registration of the vehicle, the make and model, and a description of the individual. A photo will also be helpful. Contact any member of the Parish Council with this information and they will pass this onto highways.
When there are limited stocks of grit to go round we are sure you will agree that we do need to be sensible in using it for the right reasons, in the right places.
A HUGE thanks to all of those who have done their bit to help keep our villages on the move. It is much appreciated.
