"Gym" equipment for the Little B playpark

Posted by Julie Tomlin on Nov 15 2011

Two companies presented their equipment options to those gathered in the Plough on 14th November.

The Bourtons audience asked a number of questions of both companies -

These included:

How much equipment can we have with this budget?

Two different approaches here it seemed though Sally tells me that both companies can be flexible - one company offered suggested "schemes" of equipment that gave a balanced workout (including a back massager that we all liked the sound of!).  The other worked with the client to choose the equipment that the users most wanted and advised on how to get a balance.  Either way there would be several pieces of equipment purchased to give a reasonable workout.

How easy is it to use and do you need training?

The equipment is easy to use and anyone can use it from about the age of 11 or 12.  As the equipment is fixed (ie no adjustment for seating etc) you need to have reached a minimum height to be able to use it.  Some can be used by wheelchair users.  It largely depends on the pieces chosen and the height of the user as to what can be used effectively from what age.  The pieces are designed to be used by everyone so that generations can use it together in a relaxed, non competitive environment.  (I guess that depends on the family!!)

Each piece of equipment has an instruction board explaining how to use it and the circumstances that it should not be used in eg under the influence of alcohol, pregnant.

There are no weights to adjust - this is resistance based exercise.

What will the Parish Council's liability be if someone injures themselves using it?

The Parish Council is covered if the equipment is maintained (ie inspected at regular intervals - it shouldn't need much maintenance and is guaranteed for 25 years) and the instructions for use with the appropriate disclaimers are next to the equipment.

Who will use it?

There was much discussion on this between the residents.  It was agreed that this would be a good thing for young adults and teenagers in the villages who are currently not catered for.  We have two excellent playparks for young children but little for those older.  Basically anyone can use this equipment so those intimidated by gyms can give it a go and build their confidence; the weekend joggers can add some resistance work to their exercise regime, and retired adults can give it a go and see how exercise can benefit them.  Indeed some very successful outdoor gyms have been installed at retirement properties.  This isn't the kind of equipment to body build; more the kind to ensure you "use not lose" those muscles, and give the heart some exercise.  Surely we could all use that kind of exercise!

Both companies were very approachable and would be willing to "hand-hold" as much as we need them to - so we would all get an opportunity to go and look and learn from the experts before we have a go in private!

How safe is the equipment given the adjacency to equipment for young children in the playpark?

Two approaches here - One company applies the same tests to its equipment that all the other equipment in the park has been tested to ie it is compliant with EN1176.  So it is as safe as everything else in the playpark and  Hence its equipment can be near the other equipment.

One company has minimised the risks to children but it's equipment hasn't been designed to pass the same safety standards as children's play park equipment.  There has to be a physical demarcation between the playarea and the gym area (eg a change in flooring; a low barrier; a fence) with a notice to say that it can only be used by those above the age of 11.  Then it can be located in a playpark with minimal risk to children and apparently most of its installations have been done like this.

Incidentally both companies supply British made products.
